Description
The Recordist presents exterior recordings from CH-47D Chinook helicopters that were performing fire fighting duties during many summers here in North Idaho. Recorded at a quiet airport with minimal ambient background noise I was able to record extremely distant approaches and pass bys out to 750 meters. Multiple microphone angles were utilized from the front, side and rear to give you a diverse set of material to work with. The pass bys were recorded while the helicopters was flying over my property very close overhead and two to four miles away.
Recorded at a quiet airport with minimal ambient background noise. Included are close up and distant engine starts/stops, hovering, departing and arriving. A single hand-held Schoeps MK4/MK8 Mid-Side microphone set (my favorite) was used at multiple distances and sides. Schoeps and Sennheiser ORTF microphone set-ups were used for most of the fy-bys giving you a wide stereo image to work with.
Standing close to these massive machines while they lift off and land is thrilling to say the least. The wind gusts the rotors produce almost knocked me over a few times. With the Schoeps MK4/MK8 MS microphone set in my left hand and my iPhone in my right it was tough to stay steady and standing upright while getting blasted with wind and sand debris.
2025 Update:
I am excited to present all new CH-47D Chinook helicopter recordings from summer 2025 along with sounds captured from 2016 to 2023. Included are exterior close, medium close and distant turbine starts, hovering, arriving, departing and passing by. This set of sounds were captured with high-end stereo microphones in 32-bit/96kHz Floating Point and delivered at 24-bit/96kHz the sounds have incredible detail and a wide dynamic range.
