Presenting the Heavy Duty SUV HD Professional Sound Effects Collection.

For the last seven years I have been recording the various sounds generated by my 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ Sport Utility Vehicle. This has been a huge undertaking as you might guess, cars make a whole lot of different kinds of sounds. I approached this collection differently that most would. Instead of strapping on a whole bunch of microphones for just one or two sessions I recorded the various actions of the vehicle over time and with many different equipment set-ups. This has been quite a learning experience for me as I usually do not record many automobiles but after doing so much of it for this collection I am very excited to do more and try different techniques.

Over the last seven years I have driven this vehicle with various type of microphones and recorders placed inside and outside the vehicle. From high speed interiors (some with the sunroof opening and closing) to back country roads with the tail pipe and engine compartment perspectives this collection captures a wide range of this modern age, gas guzzling, sexy beast of a automobile. Included are many pass by’s and maneuvers on dry pavement and dirt roads from a close up, and distant perspective. I placed microphones under the hood, in front and behind the SUV to get static engine starts and revs. There are some driving in snow sounds that are very difficult to record which include close up tire rubs and general snow tire movements on dry and slushy snow surfaces.

To round out the collection there is a full featured set of interior buttons, sliders, ignition keys, doors, seat belts, locks and the DVD navigation system just to name a few. To best see what’s in this collection check out the PDF sound file.

Update: Heavy Duty SUV HD Pro Extension 2 Is Here! 30 New files added June 10, 2015.
The sounds in Extension 2 were recorded on a paved country road in a wide open setting far from any other traffic. Various high speed and casual onboard perpectives with 3 microphones. Two were placed on each side of the engine under the hood and one was placed near the exhaust pipe and rear tire. Total file count now stands at 260. Uncompressed library size is 6.6GB. This is the final update to the collection. It’s been a long road… no pun intended. Enjoy! -Frank

Dirt Road Driving
These were recorded on a dirt driveway and country road. Some of the files contain starting in a garage and driving up and down a dirt driveway. The remaining sounds are onboard perspectives from driving on a dirt road. 1 stereo “under the hood” POV and 1 stereo “Exhaust” POV.

Aggressive passes with and without horn dopplers
These were recorded on a paved country road in a wide open setting far from any other traffic. Various high speed pass bys with and without the horn “doppler” are included. Other dirving actions also included. The tracks: 1 distant mono, 1 close up mono, 1 close up narrow stereo and 1 medium close wide stereo perspective.

Snow Tire Rubs
Recorded with a MKH-8040 extended frequency response microphone very close to the tire while driving on snow. Very cold day. Useful for other sound design elements including avalanches.

Horns
Various horn honks with a multitude of perspectives and channels. Close stereo and mono tracks. Distant mono tracks and a stereo “inside the house” track included. Recorded in the country and rural settings.

Interior Driving
Stereo interior tracks while driving on a freeway with the windows slightly open and smooth country roads with windows closed. Start, idle, shut off also included.
