The free “CRAZY SOUND” of the month for May 2016. A nice evening thunderstorm recorded with a Sennheiser MKH8040-ST ORTF stereo microphone late in the evening. The sound file is 24-Bit 48kHz with Soundminer Metadata embedded. Enjoy! Namaste – Frank

During the month of April and into the first week of May 2016 I recorded in quite a few locations. I managed to borrow the Mossberg 5500 shotgun from a friend and recorded some fantastic sounding shots. I also shot a Mossberg 590 and a Benelli M4 in some of these locations. I attached a DPA 4062 lav microphone to the semi-automatic shotguns and placed a close up MKH8050 near the breach and set one or two stereo microphoes nearby for the echo tail.

Here are some of the photos and video frame grabs from those sessions. The second Shotguns HD Pro teaser trailer is also featured.

Enjoy! -Frank

Since I will not be attending GDC this year I figured I would share the video I put together for last year. It took weeks to produce this video and as Bones says on Star Trek “I’m a sound designer not a video editor Jim”

I want you to know I thank all of you video game sound designers and many others in the media industry from the bottom of my heart for your amazing support of my passion. I will be at GDC in spirit and I hope this little romp through my crazy sound recording life gives you the same joy as it has done for me.

So, if you are attending GDC this year, have a few single malt scotches while there and I’ll raise my glass and say a toast to the best of the best… from the comforts of my studio in Idaho.

All my best and… Namaste. Frank

Here is the first teaser for SHOTGUNS HD Professional Sound FX Library.

Eight shotguns were recorded in various locations in the wilderness of North Idaho. Along with the standard multi-channel recordings there are a multitude of “Texture” sound effects included for layering into other sounds as you see fit. Pitch them around, mangle them, pump them up! The specific location in this teaser is a fantastic wide open field with rolling hills and mountain ranges all around. The library will be available very soon from The Recordist. Enjoy! -Frank, March 10, 2016 Got Echoes?

Over the past few months I had the honor of beta testing the Oxford Envolution plug-in from Sonnox. I normally don’t plug a plug-in directly but in this case I really want to share my experience using this new envelope shaper on the latest addition to my Suppressed Weapons Sound FX library. Right off the bat I will say WOW! I’ve never experienced such a unique and powerful transient and sustain manipulator on suppressors. I’ve used many including their TransMod plugin and always find new and exciting ways to enhance the sound effects I include in my libraries with envelope shaping.

Suppressed Weapons Update
Stage 2 recording and post production has been underway all summer and continues into the Fall. So far over 15 location recording sessions have been completed, some small and some large. Many locations were used to provide the sound designer with an abundance of unique spaces. Close and distant microphones were used that can be mixed and matched to produce realistic and not so realistic suppressor sounds. I have a few more recording sessions planned that should round out the collection.

Coming very soon from THE RECORDIST: Suppressed Weapons HD Professional Sound Effects Library. The first of it’s kind, this collection is dedicated to the sound of suppressors. For the last year I have been recording various gun suppressors in the wilds of North Idaho. This new collection includes some of the quietest suppressors on the market today. If you have ever been near a full auto M-16 machine gun without a suppressor you know how LOUD it is. Well, it’s been completely tamed with a very fine suppressor. Stage 1 is nearing completion and will be available in just a few days. Stage 2 will be recorded this fall with a completely different set of suppressors. Stay tuned for more information.

A warm thanks to those who banged on the site during the re-launch yesterday! Bugs were fixed and other things buttoned up.

As you may have heard I have completely re-built The Recordist website with a new e-commerce system and theme. Some of you know that it’s no easy task to rebuild a website from the ground up and boy, I have to say it was a time consuming process. My old website used a third party e-commerce shopping cart (DPD) that served me well for over five years. The guys that run DPD are wonderful and have a great set of tools for website shopping carts. Their system was not really build for WordPress and I had to hand code the data into a blog post and the rest is to boring to tell you.

After a year and a half of studying ammunition ballistics and acquiring all kinds of high speed and sub sonic ammunition, the recording of the second installment of Bullets HD Professional SFX library is underway. This time I’m going with larger calibers and shooting longer distances. This recording adventure is not easy and I will say it’s been one heck of a learning curve.
