If you follow me on social media you probably noticed that I’ve been going to the local airport to record aircraft of all kinds for the last two months or so. My original intention was to record private jets and maybe get a few prop planes and maybe, just maybe, record some helicopters. Well, after weeks of getting up early and bringing some gear to the airfield I got more than I bargained for. What started out as a small collection of helicopters recorded over the last few years has grown into a large and varied set of rotorcraft sound effects… Fairly quickly I might add. Unexpected? Yes. Totally fun? Yes. Here is the skinny on the transformation of Helicopters HD Mini into Helicopters HD pro. Read more
This month I have been recording lots of helicopters. One of the helicopters I’ve enjoyed recording the most has been the Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk Helicopter. This machine is a reconditioned unit from the military and is the real deal. It has been updated and modified to be used as a heavy lift helicopter but it still has the traditional sound of the original military hardware. Here are some sights and sounds from this amazing sound effects recording adventure.
Free Crazy Sound for May 2016: Evening Thunderstorm
The free “CRAZY SOUND” of the month for May 2016. A nice evening thunderstorm recorded with a Sennheiser MKH8040-ST ORTF stereo microphone late in the evening. The sound file is 24-Bit 48kHz with Soundminer Metadata embedded. Enjoy! Namaste – Frank
During the month of April and into the first week of May 2016 I recorded in quite a few locations. I managed to borrow the Mossberg 5500 shotgun from a friend and recorded some fantastic sounding shots. I also shot a Mossberg 590 and a Benelli M4 in some of these locations. I attached a DPA 4062 lav microphone to the semi-automatic shotguns and placed a close up MKH8050 near the breach and set one or two stereo microphoes nearby for the echo tail.
Here are some of the photos and video frame grabs from those sessions. The second Shotguns HD Pro teaser trailer is also featured.
The recording sessions for Shotguns HD Pro are complete. During month of March 2016 and into April I recorded in many locations in and around North Idaho. Most of the time I was doing the shooting by myself and one other time I had a fantastic shooter handling the chore. Here are a few photos from the recording sessions that took place during the last remaining sound effects gathering dates.
I recorded in my yard, at a nice mountain quarry with a spectacular view of the “Lake” as we call it up here and a wide open 400 acre ranch with virtually no echo tail. Having a near “echo free” environment to record a Lavalier microphone attached to a semi-automatic shotgun was fantastic. Also, the sound obtained from the other microphones placed at various distances was interesting indeed. Just the loud, punchy shot transient with a echo tail that came back three seconds later and was 2000 feet away.
