CH47D Chinook Helicopter Update

Great news! CH47D Chinook HD Mini & Pro have been updated with all new recordings from summer 2018. Included are close up and distant engine starts, hovering, departing and arriving. Eight new sound effects recorded with a Schoeps MK4/MK8 MS stereo microphone set and a Sony PCM D100 are in this 3.4GB update.

Contact The Recordist if you are a current license holder of either the Mini or Pro collection and would like to get the new sounds for free. Once your purchase and account are verified the additional download files will be deposited in your account.

The Recordist 20th Anniversary

Twenty years ago this month I began my stint as my alter ego: The Recordist. June 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of The Recordist and the website that I created. When I started the website, online sound effects distribution was in its infancy. There were a handful of sites with individual sounds available and the coding was tedious and tough. I was offering custom sound effects (by mail on CD) to people who contacted me through the website but I was mostly just giving sounds away. It would take 10 years (2008) before the tech was readily available to distribute my sounds on the internet.

THE HAWK Extension HD Professional Sound Effects Library. This trailer was compiled from hand-held iPhone footage taken during the recording process. This collection expands on the original HAWK library with all new exterior sounds recorded with high-end microphones including the Sennheiser MKH8040ST and a Schoeps MS set. Included are pass bys, flight test maneuvers, hovering, long approaches, landings and ground runs from a Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk Helicopter. The Hawk is Here

The Hawk HD Professional Sound FX Library Available Now

Presenting: The Hawk. One of the helicopters I’ve enjoyed recording the most is the Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk Helicopter. The UH-60A is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. The UH-60A entered service with the U.S. Army in 1979, to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the Army’s tactical transport helicopter. This machine is a reconditioned rotorcraft from military surplus and is the real deal. It has been updated and modified to be used as a heavy lift helicopter but it still has the traditional sound of the original military hardware.

The Huey is Here

The Huey HD Professional Sound FX Library Available Now

The Huey HD Professional Sound Effects Library is a 24-bit/96kHz, multi-microphone collection of sounds from a 1964 Bell UH-1H helicopter that has been reconditioned and converted for civilian use. This one of a kind set of sound effects features multiple ground and flight tests recorded in a exceptionally quiet environment at the local airport. The Bell UH-1 or better known as HUEY is by far the toughest, most bad ass helicopter in the world.

Helicopters HD Mini is the first in a new series of sound effects collections that have the best of the best from a very specific subject.

Huey • AgustaWestland 119Kx • Eurocopter AS350 • Schweizer 269C

The helicopters in this set are from random fly-bys over the house and when out on location recording other material. Some are from airshows in the area and the local airport. Instead of waiting for more occasions when more random helicopters can be recorded to make a giant collection I’ve decided to release the cream of the crop from the last couple of years.

The Recordist Five Fifty Retrospective

Since I will not be attending GDC this year I figured I would share the video I put together for last year. It took weeks to produce this video and as Bones says on Star Trek “I’m a sound designer not a video editor Jim”

I want you to know I thank all of you video game sound designers and many others in the media industry from the bottom of my heart for your amazing support of my passion. I will be at GDC in spirit and I hope this little romp through my crazy sound recording life gives you the same joy as it has done for me.

So, if you are attending GDC this year, have a few single malt scotches while there and I’ll raise my glass and say a toast to the best of the best… from the comforts of my studio in Idaho.

The Envolution of Suppressors

Over the past few months I had the honor of beta testing the Oxford Envolution plug-in from Sonnox. I normally don’t plug a plug-in directly but in this case I really want to share my experience using this new envelope shaper on the latest addition to my Suppressed Weapons Sound FX library. Right off the bat I will say WOW! I’ve never experienced such a unique and powerful transient and sustain manipulator on suppressors. I’ve used many including their TransMod plugin and always find new and exciting ways to enhance the sound effects I include in my libraries with envelope shaping.

SANDPOINT – Frank Bry hears things. It’s his job, actually. Where most of us might detect a twig breaking underfoot — if we notice it at all – Bry’s ears snap to attention, fully alert to the myriad ways a twig can be broken and how it might sound from dozens of different angles.

For Bry, the crack of ice on a frozen lake is only an overture to the symphony that follows. It might be a deep-bellied echo from the depths below, or a sparkling chorus of bubbles rising up to answer the initial fracture, but he hears every note, registers every subtle aspect of the soundscape.
