Free Crazy Sound for May 2016: Evening Thunderstorm

The free “CRAZY SOUND” of the month for May 2016. A nice evening thunderstorm recorded with a Sennheiser MKH8040-ST ORTF stereo microphone late in the evening. The sound file is 24-Bit 48kHz with Soundminer Metadata embedded. Enjoy! Namaste – Frank

On May 18, 2016 a scattered and isolated storm front moved into the area and I set up my Sennheiser MKH8040ST ORTF microphone rig out under the “Thunder Protection Unit”. This area is basically some trees with a rig to hold a moving blanket over the microphones to protect them from any rain drops. Trees are great rain absorbers, they soften and filter the heavy drop impacts and in combination with the moving blanket, the microphone stays dry.

This two minute and thirty second soundscape contains the last three thunder claps that occurred after a stunning twenty four minute storm blew through. I had pulled the MKH8040-ST rig out from under the tress and was ready to head off to sleep when a second, quicker set of thunder claps presented themselves. The time was 11 o’clock in the evening which is the best time to record this stuff around here. No cars driving by, no birds or insects. There were a couple of crickets but they ceased as soon as the wind and rain kicked in.
