The RPD Light Machine Gun is the next weapon in The Recordist “Full-Auto Weapon Series”. This Soviet era machine gun chambered for the 7.62×39mm M43 cartridge was recorded on a sprawling 400 acre ranch in North Idaho with a huge amount of microphones and handheld recorders. Perspectives include attached, very close, medium and distant. From just a few inches out to 150 meters this collection has you covered. 6 mono and 9 stereo microphones provide a wide range of source material from this light machine gun. The weapon recorded is authentic, not a replica.
Included are the original time aligned/delay compensated source recordings without noise reduction (none was needed) and a few special mixes from the mono and stereo microphones.
Background:
The RPD is a 7.62mm light machine gun developed in the Soviet Union by Vasily Degtyaryov for the 7.62×39mm M43 cartridge. It was created as a replacement for the DP machine gun chambered for the 7.62×54mmR round. It is a precursor of most squad automatic weapons. The RPD entered service during the closing days of World War II, but it would take almost a decade before it would have widespread use among first-tier soviet units. Eventually supplanting the RPK, the RPD remained popular through the Vietnam War, multiple Middle Eastern conflicts, and is even used today by units in Asia and Africa.
The RPD fires from an open bolt in full auto only. There is no provision for semi-auto fire, although RPD gunners were trained to fire in short bursts to prolong the life of the non-quick-change barrels. The RPD feeds ammunition from the left side using a metallic, open-link, non-disintegrating belt typically holding 100 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.
