Introducing the Schweizer 300CB sound library. Recorded on two occasions here in Idaho at my favorite “quiet” airport. Starts, stops, auto rotations and general flying are included from both interior and exterior perspectives. Multiple distances were also captured to give you a wide set of perspectives to use in your sound design.
The exterior perspectives were recorded with a XY stereo MKH-8040 and Schoeps MS set. Since I do not have three hands I could only use one microphone at a time, the other hand held the video camera. I would switch between the two microphones during a break in the action. And I needed a break every now and then since I was chasing the helicopter all over the airport. At my age, well… you get it.
I was able to place a Sony PCM D-100 inside the helicopter on one of the training flights. Placed between the seats exactly in the middle of the Schweizer with the microphone capsules set wide, you get a nice stereo cabin perspective.
Included are the MS stereo decoded files and the original MS encoded files from the Schoeps MK4/MK8. The Encoded files are interleaved stereo with the Mid (MK4) on the left and the Side (MK8) on the right. This allows you to use the MS stereo plugin of your choosing to adjust the width of the sound. You can also use the “leg picker” in Soundminer Pro to choose which channel you want to utilize. You may also change the “ChannelLayout” field in Soundminer to M/S on these files to audition MS decoded stereo right inside Soundminer.
Helicopter Information (Wiki)
The Schweizer 300 (Now called Sikorsky S-300) family of light utility helicopters was originally produced by Hughes Helicopters, as a development of the Hughes 269. Later manufactured by Schweizer Aircraft, the basic design has been in production for almost 50 years. The single, three-bladed main rotor and piston-powered S-300 is mostly used as a cost-effective platform for training and agriculture.
