CRAZY SOUND OF THE MONTH for November 2013: Rock smashes. Recorded with a Sennheiser MKH-8040ST at 24-Bit 96K. These rocks weathered by millions of years of wind, rain and snow break apart completely when tossed onto a solid concrete surface. During the recording sessions for the Ultimate Rockslide collections I gathered these “soft” granite chunks and stored them in my garage. My wife was always asking about them and why I was keeping them. Well, now she knows I smashed them to bits.

I had six buckets of these rocks with many different sizes inside. I started with the larger rocks and as they became smaller I would toss them together from the buckets. As they became even smaller chunks I then recorded the debris lightly falling from a secret device I built so I could get longer debris sprays without hearing the sound of them leaving the device. More on that someday… I don’t want to give away all my secrets.

The sound file here has some of the takes in sequence as they became more and more just small rocks and sand debris. The complete session will be available in a new collection slated for release later this year.
