The recording sessions for Shotguns HD Pro are complete. During month of March 2016 and into April I recorded in many locations in and around North Idaho. Most of the time I was doing the shooting by myself and one other time I had a fantastic shooter handling the chore. Here are a few photos from the recording sessions that took place during the last remaining sound effects gathering dates.

I recorded in my yard, at a nice mountain quarry with a spectacular view of the “Lake” as we call it up here and a wide open 400 acre ranch with virtually no echo tail. Having a near “echo free” environment to record a Lavalier microphone attached to a semi-automatic shotgun was fantastic. Also, the sound obtained from the other microphones placed at various distances was interesting indeed. Just the loud, punchy shot transient with a echo tail that came back three seconds later and was 2000 feet away.

Enjoy! -Frank

Here is the first teaser for SHOTGUNS HD Professional Sound FX Library.

Eight shotguns were recorded in various locations in the wilderness of North Idaho. Along with the standard multi-channel recordings there are a multitude of “Texture” sound effects included for layering into other sounds as you see fit. Pitch them around, mangle them, pump them up! The specific location in this teaser is a fantastic wide open field with rolling hills and mountain ranges all around. The library will be available very soon from The Recordist. Enjoy! -Frank, March 10, 2016 Got Echoes?

Recording the bullets for my new SFX library called BULLETS HD PRO has been quite an experience. So far I’ve recorded over a dozen guns from a .22 to a M-60 but nothing had sounded as cool or as strange as recording a Mossberg 590 shotgun with a special shell called the “Bolo”. A Bolo is two heavy duty slugs molded on to each end of a 5 inch piece of steel wire and when fire expands 240%.

A Mossberg 590 12 Gauge Shotgun recorded from 3 positions at 24-Bit 192kHz. 1) Original speed: side, front and rear. two versions each. 2) Played back at half speed: side, front and rear. 3) Played back at quarter speed: side, front and rear.

I quickly edited and mastered them in Pro Tools at 192K with some H-Comp compression, Decapitator and L2 limiting. Oh yeah… I almost forgot to mention Chuck Russom’s “Call It Good” favorite: RenBass.

Below is the 192K file you can download and have fun sith (I hope) Don’t worry, I can shoot anytime here on the ranch. I can always get more if I need them. -Frank
