At long last, it’s here! Presenting the sequel to Thunderstorm HD: Thunderstorm 2 HD Professional Sound Effects Library. Over two years and dozens of storms in the making, this 24-Bit 96kHz collection of thunder and lightning is just what you need to make any storm soundscape complete. Included among the 55 Broadcast WAV files are extremely close lightning strikes, booming rumbles, heavy claps, rainstorms and special LFE tracks for you to drop in your session with no fuss. Over 900 megabytes of pure North Idaho thunder at your fingertips. Mix and match the tracks together to build the perfect storm boomers. Also included are specially designed lightning strikes using analog style compression, multi-file layering and pitch change.
The last two years here in North Idaho have been quite interesting with many types of storms blowing in. Thunderstorms were few and far between but when they rumbled over the ranch I was there, Single Malt Scotch in hand with my MKH-8040ST and Sanken CSS-5 microphones and recorded some of the most fantastic thunder I have ever heard here. Now, with the release of this library you don’t have to suffer through the hours and hours of waiting and waiting for the next storm to show it’s stuff… it’s all right here in Thunderstorm 2 HD Pro. Enjoy! -Frank

This video is a thunderstorm I recorded at 1:30AM on April 24, 2012. The unpredictable nature of thunder is that you never know what you are going to get. I usually hope for the best and even have my front entrance modified with removable baffles to mute the rain drips but every now and then I can get some real nice claps and lightning strikes that need little to no clean up to make them sound good. They are what they are. These gems also come from recording a storm at night when it is really nice and quiet here. Since I cannot command the thunder gods to play at night I am at their mercy as to when I record. So, sometimes I have to record during the day. This track has some rain and wind but it makes for a nice soundscape.
The best thunder I record happens when the storm is going around the ranch maybe to the North or from the South to the East. My recording location (right in front of my door) faces North so when a thunderstorm comes in from the West or South I really hope it makes a direction change and skirts around me. When this happens I usually get many takes without the heavy rain and wind associated with a severe thunderstorm. The best times are at the start of the storm and right after it passes. I have witnessed hours of thunder to the North and South of me without rain and wind but that is very rare.

Thunderstorm Recording Techniques
To kick off thunderstorm season here in North Idaho I want to share with you some new thunder and lightning recordings along with some from my Thunderstorm HD library released a couple years ago. I also want to share some of my tips and techniques I use when trying to record that elusive lightning strike. The audio clip below is thunder I’ve recorded over the last 2 years. The clip contains the raw recordings, no processing except crossfades and gain adjustments. What you hear is what you get. Now, some background information.
Midnight Thunderstorm on June 12 2011 With 8040s
For the last month or so I’ve been driving my wife crazy with my microphone and recorder rigs sitting near the front door. I’ve been trying to record the thunderstorms that were forecast by the experts. So far I’ve been batting a thousand with thunder fail so last night I moved all the gear downstairs to the studio to make good with my wife.
2AM Thunderstorm September 18th 2011
This is a recording of a thunderstorm that passed through in the middle of the night and completely caught me off guard. This is the time of year that the weather here in the North Idaho panhandle brings surprises. Cold, heat, wind, rain and lightning are the norm on any given day. The weekend was much cooler than the last two months and I should have known a storm would zip on though and I almost missed it.
Lightning Strikes, June 24 2012
The house rumbled shortly before 3AM PST and yes, it woke me up. A thunderstorm was approaching from the South. This time of year I have the microphones and video camera at the ready for such events. I placed the High Definition MKH-8040ST microphones and the FlipHD camera just outside the front door and waited.
Thunderstorm Cleanup With RX2
This is a quick tutorial on one of my techniques for cleaning up thunder recordings. At the bottom of the page is a version of the original recording which you can download from SoundCloud for free. (24-Bit 48k) Recorded with a Sennheiser MKH-8040ST set at XY 90 degrees. Approximately 50% of the thunder I record here on the ranch is fairly clean with little to no rain and wind. The other 50% has some other junk like crickets, birds, cars, trains, bats, dogs, you name it. If I can hear it even slightly before recording it can get in there. The unpredictable nature of thunder is that you never know what you are going to get.
