Product Description
Presenting GunTales HD Professional Sound Effects Collection, a collection of firearms recorded for the simple purpose of capturing the “report” or “reverb tail” from the guns. Included are small caliber handguns, two bolt action rifles (featuring the Barrett 50 BMG), a shotgun (with rifled slugs) and a AR-15 assault rifle. The first recording session took place on a wide open 400 acre ranch near the mountains and was recorded from the side and rear of the six guns at a medium and far distance. The Second session was recorded at a location in the mountains at a area called Canyon Gap. At an elevation of 3800 ft above sea level on a old logging road the microphones were placed close up, medium and far to capture the graceful mountian echo along with the explosive muzzle blast of the guns that reverberated off the rocks. With microphones pointed in many directions a diverse and unique report was obtained with each microphone capturing a different style of reverberation.
The idea behind this collection came to me after the many gun sessions I have worked on here in North Idaho. I always thought that it would be really cool to record just the “report” from the gun firing into the remote mountains and fields here. I have recorded many guns up close and personal and decided that it was time to record only the tickling of the air molecules bouncing around the beautiful and isolated locations i’ve visited.
There are no “extreme close up” sounds that capture the mechanics of the firearms in this collection with the idea being you can add whatever close up sound to fit your needs. The collection includes the final mastered versions along with the source files used to create the mastered sounds.
Ranch Microphone Placement. Elevation: 2400ft above sea level
I recorded 8 channels of audio using a Sound Devices 744T and two 702 recorders. Feeding the recorders were (4) Sennheiser MKH-8040′s, MKH-8050, MKH-8060, MKH-8020 and a MKH-416. The MKH-8040′s were set up in 2 pairs, a stereo XY and a stereo spaced pair. The spaced pair of MKH-8040′s were very far apart but equal distance and angle to the center shooting location. This is a new technique I was trying out and am very happy with the results as they can also be used as 2 mono tracks that can be mixed in mono or panned left-right and any width.
- Sennheiser MKH-8040LR: 20 meters behind gun, spaced pair, wide
- Sennheiser MKH-8040ST: 40 meters behind gun, center

- Sennheiser MKH-8050: 30 meters to side of muzzle. Left side
- Sennheiser MKH-8060: 30 meters to side of muzzle. Right side
- Sennheiser MKH-8020: 30 meters to side of muzzle. Left side, Pointed away

50 BMG Blog Post: Recording The Barrett 99 50 BMG Rifle
You may have heard a rumor through the social network grapevine that I finally took a Barrett 99 50 BMG rifle out into the North Idaho wilderness and recorded the tiny little sound it makes. Well, it’s true. I did, and it was LOUD… and so much fun capture such an amazing sounding gun. I have never recorded such a large rifle before and was very anxious after recording 15 body thumping shots to get back to the studio and listen to the multi-microphone recordings. In this blog post I will explain to the best of my “spell correcting” ability how I set up and what gear I used to capture the incredible echo this gun produced on a secret 400 acre ranch.
