Rock Blasting Explosion

Recording the sound a large rock explosion on a mountain overlooking Lake Pend Oreille in North Idaho on August 14, 2013.

I was sitting on my deck enjoying a peaceful summer afternoon the other and then it started… It sounded like a machine gun shooting far off in the distance but it was actually a blasting and drilling machine on the mountain directly behind the house. The location is approximately 200 meters away. I have recorded many sounds up there before and was excited to hear some noise from there again, especially this type of noise because I knew what was going to happen after the drilling stopped… Blasting!

Explosions The Alloy-oZone Way

I have been trying out two iZotope processors for a few days now and discovered they can really enhance raw sound effects recordings in an exciting way (for me anyway). I’m tired of the same old stuff from the mainstream plug-in companies and want to spice up my life a bit. For this blog post I ran some explosion sound effects I recorded in 2012 in various mountain ranges in North Idaho. I was messing around with Alloy 2 and Ozone 5 in the Soundminer Pro VST Rack and came up with two explosion sounds that really got my creative juices flowing.

THe demo has the explosions in the sequence of RAW and then PROCESSED for a ORTF MKH8040ST and then a XY MKH8040ST recorded as two sync locked stereo tracks. I wish I kept the VST Rack settings but during my excitement I accidentally cleared the rack. Oops. Here goes from memory and some screen grabs of the FX chain list.

The first in the FX chain was Alloy 2 with the EQUALIZER – TRANSIENT – EXCITER – LIMITER. The EQUALIZER was just to filter out any heavy subsonic low end that might overdrive the FX chain. The TRANSIENT was set to have maximum sustain and attack. The EXCITER was used to enhance the high end ever so slightly. Finally, the LIMITER was set medium loud with a short release.
Ozone 5
Next up was Ozone 5 with the DYNAMICS and MAXIMIZER modules active. A very simple chain with some multiband dynamics on the low and high frequencies to boost them up and add some life. The MAXIMIZER was totally cranked as far as it could go. 20dB if I remember correctly.

Well, that’s it for now. I just wanted to share my excitement with you about these fantastic processors and tell you they can be used for just abut anything. -Frank

Explosives HD Pro SFX Trailer

Get ready… It’s coming very soon. More than 450 earth shaking explosions and black powder sound effects in High Definition from The Recordist. Here is a small sampling of the many recording sessions from the last 3 years. Don’t miss the blooper clip at the very end of the video!

As many of you already know I’ve been recording lots of Black Powder and other “Explosive” things. Well, here is the audio teaser and video trailer showcasing some of the sounds I recorded and designed from the raw source material.

I’ve recorded a whole bunch of Tannerite, White Lightning, A Black Powder Cannon, Large Caliber Rifles and some other secret stuff I’m not cleared to have video and pictures of. This new library will be a massive collection of things that make a loud noise when lit up and will include all sorts of black powder bursts, sizzle, flames, rocket type effects and many other things I have not thought of yet.

Some of the source material is thunder, lightning, plastic air pops, Weatherby 300 rounds and various shotguns. Here in North Idaho we have a amazing environment for recording loud bangs and weapons. The reverb tails even from a small caliber rifle can produce really cool echoes and textures depending on the location and time of year. Some of the locations where I recorded were on a mountain top rock quarry, a dense forest, a medium size gravel pit and my own field here on the ranch. I’ve also recorded during all the four seasons and I will say they all sound a little different.

The collection is still a work in progress and I have many more sessions planned for this fall. When I feel the library contains enough sounds it will be released as a Beta then as the final collection. Until then please enjoy the video and audio presentations and keep an eye out for future blog posts of the latest recording sessions. Enjoy! -Frank
